How to Avoid Car Rental Scams and Hidden Fees in Agadir

Most car rentals in Agadir go perfectly well. The problems that do happen almost always come from the same handful of practices: a price that grows at the desk, a deposit that never comes back on time, or damage you did not cause. This guide explains the most common car rental traps in Agadir and the questions that protect you.
1. The price that changes at the counter
You book at 20 €/day online and sign a contract for 45 €/day. The difference is usually "mandatory" insurance, airport delivery, a second driver or an out-of-hours fee that was never shown at booking.
How to avoid it: ask for the total price for your exact dates, in writing, before you travel — including delivery, insurance and any extra driver. A written WhatsApp quote is a valid record.
2. The deposit block that ties up your card
Deposits of €800–€2,000 are frozen on a credit card and sometimes take weeks to be released after you return home. Some companies also deduct "administration" costs from it.
How to avoid it: rent from a company that takes no deposit at all. We do not block anything on any card — nothing frozen means nothing to chase later. See our guide to no-deposit rental at Agadir Airport.
3. Fake or pre-existing damage charges
The classic version: an existing scratch is not noted at pickup, then charged to you at return.
How to avoid it: walk around the car with the agent, film a slow video of all four sides, the roof, the wheels and the windscreen, and make sure every mark is written on the contract before you drive away. Do the same at return. Any serious company will wait while you film.
4. Fuel policy tricks
"Full-to-empty" means you prepay a full tank at an inflated rate and hand back whatever fuel you did not use for free.
How to avoid it: accept only full-to-full, photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and keep the last fuel receipt.
5. Insurance that covers almost nothing
Basic cover often excludes tyres, glass, the underside of the car and the roof — exactly what suffers on mountain roads to Paradise Valley or Taghazout.
How to avoid it: ask two direct questions: what is the excess on this specific car? and are tyres, glass and undercarriage included? Get the answers before booking, not at the desk.
6. Nobody answers when something goes wrong
A flat tyre on the road to Taghazout at 8 pm is where cheap rentals really get expensive.
How to avoid it: confirm there is one direct phone or WhatsApp number, answered by a person, for the whole rental period.

FAQ
Are car rental scams common in Agadir?
Outright scams are rare. Aggressive upselling, unclear insurance and slow deposit refunds are far more common, and all three are avoidable by getting the total price and cover in writing first.
Should I pay for a rental car online in advance?
You do not need to. Paying on arrival, after you have inspected the car, keeps the leverage on your side.
What should I photograph at pickup?
A full video of the exterior, close-ups of any existing damage, the fuel gauge, the odometer and the signed contract.
Ready to book your car?
Free airport delivery, no deposit, pay on arrival.
